Permanent Methods of Birth Control

There are ways for both men and women to sterilize themselves.  This is called a vasectomy for men, and tubal sterilization for women.

When a couple is choosing a permanent mode of birth control, often a vasectomy is the preferred choice because it is a less invasive surgery.  It is cheaper and shorter.

Neither a vasectomy or tubal ligation affects the hormones in the body.  You will be able to enjoy sex the same way you did previously.

Sometimes for medical reasons, a man will have to have his testicles removed, or a woman will have to have her uterus removed.  These methods (castration and hysterectomy) are not used for sterilization, but for other medical issues.  They will, however, result in sterilization.

Vasectomies and tubal sterilizations are both permanent.  You have to ask yourself if you should use permanent birth control before making this major decision.  There are some very valid reasons for using permanent birth control to consider as well.

Neither vasectomies nor tubal sterilizations prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases or infections.

Except for abstinence, no method of birth control is 100% effective, including permanent methods.  Find out your chances of pregnancy after permanent birth control.
