IntraUterine Systems (IUSs)

An IntraUterine System (IUS) is a specific type of IntraUterine Device (IUD).  An IUS in inserted into the uterus, and it delivers hormones.  The brand of IUS in Canada, America, and the UK is Mirena.

Mirena works for up to five years.  It releases levonorgestrel (a progestin) into the bloodstream.

Mirena is different than copper IUDs because it affects a woman’s hormone levels.  It also helps decrease the flow and length of a woman’s period.

You cannot use Mirena if you have had liver disease.  You cannot use Mirena if you have, or may have, breast cancer.  You might choose another method of birth control if you have a history of blood clots.

This form of IUD is not able to be used as emergency contraception.

One of the benefits of Mirena is that it delivers hormones locally, and so has fewer side effects than other progestin-only hormonal birth control methods, such as Depo-Provera and the progestin-only pill.

Mirena is effective immediately if it is inserted within seven days of your period.  If not, use another form of birth control for seven days after insertion.
