Advantages and Disadvantages of IUDs
IUDs are the most common form of birth control worldwide. They are also among the most effective forms of birth control, with a higher than 99% rating.
IUDs do not require any forethought, or any interruption of sex play. They do not require remembering something once a day or week. They do not require tracking of the fertility patterns.
The disadvantage of IUDs is that you have to go to a doctor to have it inserted.
Although IUDs work as long-term birth control (sometimes up to ten years), fertility returns when they are removed.
Copper IUDs do not affect a woman’s hormone levels.
Copper IUDs can cause an increase in menstrual flow. This can sometimes lead to anemia. Spotting between periods is common, as is an increase in cramps. These side effects often go away in the first few months of use.
