Possible Side Effects of Oral Contraceptives

Birth control pills, like most other medication, can cause certain side effects.

Some women experience nausea and vomiting when they are on birth control pills.  This can pass after three months or so.  If you find yourself feeling constantly nauseous, speak to your doctor about finding a birth control pill that works for you.  Because there are so man different types of pills, you can try two or three to find the dosage that works best for you.

Birth control pills can affect a woman’s breasts.  Some women find that their breasts are larger when they are on birth control.  Other women find that their breasts are overly tender or sensitive when they take birth control. 

Headaches can be a side effect of birth control. 

Although birth control helps to regulate a woman’s period, for the first few months on any oral birth control, there is a higher chance that there will be breakthrough bleeding or spotting between periods.  This is generally nothing to be concerned about.  If it does not go away after three months, or is causing you concern because it is so heavy, talk to your doctor.

Birth control pills can lead to either weight gain or weight loss (which can sometimes be due to a change in appetite.

Some side effects might also include: loss of scalp hair, a change in the effect of your contact lenses, fluid retention, pancreatic inflammation, and vaginal infection.

Many women experience few or no side effects on birth control.  If you experience side effects that you find intolerable, talk to your doctor to change your birth control prescription or method.
