Depo-Provera

Depo-Provera is a shot administered every three months to prevent pregnancy.  It contains medroxyprogesterone acetate, which is a progestin.  Depo-Provera does not contain estrogen.

There is also depo subQ provera 104, a newer shot that has a lower hormone dose that Depo-Provera.

The major advantages of Depo-Provera are that you only have to take a shot every 11 to 13 weeks.  This is also the most effective form of birth control, second only to abstinence.

One of the disadvantages of the shot, however, is that you have to make an appointment at your doctor’s office or at a clinic to get your birth control.  This is only four times a year, however, which is still less hassle than other birth control methods.

Unlike many other forms of hormonal birth control, with Depo-Provera, you don’t have to wait seven days for it to take effect.  As soon as you get your first injection (as soon as you walk out of the office, even!) you will be protected against unwanted pregnancies.

One of the disadvantages of Depo-Provera is that it can cause slight weight gain (an average of four pounds a year).  With regular diet and exercise, however, this side effect can be minimized.
