Fertility Awareness Methods

There are a few different types of fertility awareness based contraception.

These methods help you to chart your fertility so that you will know when you are most likely to get pregnant.  On the days when you are most likely to get pregnant, you refrain from sex altogether (periodic abstinence) or you choose to use a secondary method of birth control.  You will likely have nine or more days each month were you will be most fertile.

Fertility Awareness methods of birth control work best for:

  • women who are in a committed relationship
  • women whose partners actively support them in their birth control methods
  • women who are not uncomfortable with their bodies
  • women who are organized and able to keep accurate records

There are three major types of fertility based methods, the temperature method, the cervical mucus method, and the calendar method (or rhythm).  They can be used alone or in conjunction with other methods.

To see the effectiveness of each of these methods, check our birth control effectiveness chart.

If you plan to undertake a fertility awareness method, you need to speak to a doctor or professional.  They will help you learn about your personal fertility cycle and train you to undertake this method of birth control.
