Biological Methods of Birth Control
Some women do not want to use either hormonal or barrier-based methods for birth control.
There are a few different categories of biological methods of birth control, including abstinence and partial abstinence methods. Methods that involve partial abstinence use different ways of charting the menstrual cycle, and are called fertility awareness based methods.
Fertility Awareness Methods chart a woman’s menstrual cycle to determine when she can conceive. There are numerous Fertility Awareness-based Methods. These include Standard Days, the ovulation (Billings) method, and Basal Body Temperature, among others. These methods can sometimes be used in combination with each other.
Withdrawal and outercourse are two willpower based methods of birth control.
Breastfeeding, or LAM (lactational amenorrhea), is another biological way to prevent pregnancy.
Some people are wary of using biological methods of birth control because they often have lower effectiveness rates than hormonal or barrier-based methods. This is because they often require more of a time commitment or more understanding of the fertility cycle to work.
