If your condom breaks

You have been responsible, and you are having protected sex.  Suddenly, during sex, the condom breaks.  What should you do?

If the condom breaks during sex, the guy should be able to feel it.  (If you or your partner is unsure, try breaking a condom during masturbation to see what it feels like).  Quickly remove the penis from the vagina, take off the broken condom, and put a new condom on to continue sex.

If a condom breaks and semen spills, wash the semen away with soap and water.  If semen spills into a woman’s vagina during the fertile period, you will need to get emergency contraception.  To determine when your fertile time is each month, you can look at the Standard Days method, or you can ask your doctor or clinician.

If your condom breaks, and you are using double contraception, such as condoms and hormonal birth control (the pill, the Patch, etc), then simply replace the condom to continue sex.  You will not need to get emergency contraception.
