Barrier-based Birth Control Methods
There are numerous methods of barrier-based birth controls. Some of these, like female condoms and male condoms can prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.
Barrier-based methods work by preventing the sperm from reaching the egg. They often block the cervix, the opening that leads from the inside of the vagina to the uterus.
Barrier-based methods can be divided into two categories, prescription, and non-prescription. Non-prescription barrier-based methods include the condom and the female condom, as well as spermicide and the sponge. Prescription based barrier methods include cervical caps, diaphragms, and shields.
Caps, diaphragms, and shields are latex or silicone based barriers that are used with spermicide to prevent fertilization.
If you are interested in prescription barrier methods such as the cap, diaphragm, or shield, see our chart that compares prescription barrier methods to see some of the differences. Check out the advantages and disadvantages of prescription barrier methods, how to wash diaphragms, caps, and shields, as well as the risks of prescription based barrier methods.
